Here I have another sugar-free muffin recipe to share with you, and this one is one of my family's favorite. We love apples, and these sugar-free muffins are fully loaded with apple flavor from the applesauce and apple cubes.
It will take you about 40 minutes to prepare and bake them, and you don't need any special baking equipment, just a bowl and a spatula. I'm using my homemade applesauce as one of the ingredients, but feel free to use a store-bought one if you prefer.
These delicious apple muffins are great for BLW and beyond. We love packing a couple when we go out to the playground or to story time, and both my baby boy and preschooler devoured them.

So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!
01. To start, I mix in a bowl the applesauce, eggs and oil until it's all well combined. If you don't have the time to make your own sugar-free applesauce, then you could buy an unsweetened one (paid link). As for the oil, I'm using light olive oil, but you could use any light oil you prefer and have at home, like coconut oil.
02. Next, I'm adding the dry ingredients, flour, oats, baking powder and cinnamon. I'm using quick oats (not oats flour) that I simply add to the batter along with the all-purpose flour and the baking powder that is going to help as a rising agent for my sugar-free muffins.
03. I mix everything gently with a spatula using folding moves from the bottom to the top. Try not to overwork the batter, just mix until the flour is incorporated.
04. Now it's time for the apples and the raisins. I peel one apple and cut it into cubes. I add the apple cubes to the batter along with the raisins. Then, I gently incorporate them into the batter with my spatula. That's it, we are now ready for the oven.
05. I'm using some silicon muffin cases that are reusable and it's easier to remove the muffins when baked. To get big, high-domed muffins like mine, you will need to fill in the cases to the top and that will give you about 9 muffins. Otherwise, you could spread the batter between 12 muffin cases and get smaller-raised muffins.
06. I'm baking the apple muffins for 20-25 minutes until they have a nice golden brown color. Try not to open the oven for the first 20 minutes as you might stop the muffins from rising.
📖 Substitutions & Variations
- You could use steel-cut oats instead of quick oats.
- Instead of cinnamon, you could use ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves and ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg.
- For more flavor and texture, you could leave the skin on the apples.

These dairy-free and sugar-free apple muffins are great for breakfast or an afternoon snack. They are easy to pack and we love taking a couple with us when we go to the playground for some extra energy. Now and then, I add one to my preschooler's lunchbox as a little healthy treat. Let me know how you are having your muffins in the comments below!
🧰 Storage
You will get about 9 apple muffins if you fill up the cases to the top as I do here. You could store them in an airtight container on the kitchen counter for 2-3 days or in the fridge for 4-5 days.
Although they go down fast, especially if you are a big family, you might want to put a couple in the freezer for a rainy day when you want a quick snack for your little one. I wrap each one in foil and put it in the freezer, then I just thaw it overnight or take one out and defrost it in the microwave.
💭 Tips
- Don't overmix the batter, gently mix with a spatula until the ingredients are incorporated.
- Bake until the muffins are golden brown and do not open the oven before 20 minutes.
- If you decide to freeze some of the muffins, I recommend doing it as soon as they cool down.

Can I replace the apple with fresh or frozen blueberries?

So happy you liked them! Yes, you could add about a cup of fresh or frozen blueberries instead of apples.

Can I use gluten free flour in this recipe?
Also, how long would it take to bake 48 mini muffins?
Julia Droulia
Hi Chris, I haven't tried them with gluten-free flour. You might need to adjust the amount of flour so they don't end up dry. Let me know if you try it.
For mini muffins, I would bake them for 12–15 minutes. If you are not sure, you could insert a toothpick in the center and check if it comes out clean.
