🔪 Step-by-step Instructions
So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!
01. To start, I'm making the chocolate spread. In a bowl, I have my almond butter and I add the maple syrup. You could also use peanut butter or hazelnut butter. Make sure you get a smooth one, as the crunchy ones will make it more difficult to spread.
I'm using a little bit of maple syrup for some sweetness and to bring down the bitterness of the cacao. You could also use honey if you are not sharing these chocolate twists with a baby under 12 months.
02. Then I add the cacao powder and milk. I'm using cacao powder instead of cocoa powder, as it's less processed and contains more nutrients. If you can't find any, then you could substitute it with cocoa powder.

03. I mix everything well with a spoon or a small whisk. If it's difficult to mix or you prefer it to be more creamy, then you could add one more tablespoon of milk.
04. I open the package of one of the puff pastry sheets and lay it flat. Then I spread the chocolate spread to cover the surface, leaving about 0.5in from the edges.

05. I cover it with the other puff pastry sheet. Then using a pizza wheel or a knife, I cut it in half lengthwise and then into strips about 1 inch.
06. I take each strip and twist it with my fingers. Then, I place it on a lined baking tray, leaving about a finger space between them.

07. In a bowl, I mix an egg with a tablespoon of milk or water and beat it until well mixed. I brush each chocolate twist with the egg wash. The egg helps to give them a nice golden brown color.
08. They only need 20-25 minutes in the oven until they get a nice golden brown color.

📖 Substitutions & Variations
- Instead of almond butter, you could use peanut or hazelnut butter or another nut butter of your choice.
- Instead of maple syrup, you could use honey (not for babies under 12 months).
- You could add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for some extra flavor.
- If allergic to eggs, you could skip the egg wash, as it mainly gives a nice, shiny finish to the chocolate twists.
🍽 Serving suggestions
Babies (6-12 months): For babies under 12 months, I would offer these chocolate puff pastry twists as a treat rather than a regular snack or breakfast. They have maple syrup in them and although it's healthier than processed sugar, it's still a sweetener.
All other ages: For older kids and adults, you could enjoy these chocolate twists for breakfast with a cup of milk. They are also easy to pack for the park or to put a couple in your little one's lunchbox.

Easy to clean stainless steel trays. I have a couple of those for roasting veggies or baking cookies.
Buy On Amazon🧰 Storage
If you have any leftover chocolate twists, you could store them in an airtight container or the bread bin for up to 3-4 days.
I like to store any leftover chocolate spread in a little jar in the fridge for up to 7-10 days. I spread it on toast or pancakes or sometimes add a teaspoon in a bowl with yogurt along with some nuts for an afternoon snack.
💭 Tips
- Leave the puff pastry on the kitchen counter for 20-30 minutes to thaw or overnight in the fridge.
- Brushing the chocolate twists with some egg before placing them in the oven, helps to get a nice golden brown color.
- Cacao powder is healthier than cocoa powder as it's less processed and contains more nutrients.
❓ FAQ
Chocolate twists are made using puff pastry, a type of pastry that has butter in it making it flaky and puffed when baked.
Cacao powder has a lighter chocolaty color than cocoa powder. It is also less processed and contains more nutrients than cocoa powder, making it a healthier choice for baking.
