These homemade baked potato wedges are so easy to make and are baby and kid-friendly. For BLW babies, they are easy to hold with their little fingers and a great side dish with some homemade meatballs or chicken strips.

Kids love french fries and potato wedges and since the store-bought ones are high in salt and not so healthy, I'm sharing a quick and healthy option of this great side dish with you here.

These baked potato wedges are very aromatic and if you follow my tips they will come out as delicious and crispy as the deep-fried ones. If you are looking for more side-dish ideas to serve with your little one's meal, make sure you check my sweet potato fries and my crispy zucchini fries.

👩🏻‍🍳 Why you should try my recipe

  • Easy to prepare, with a few simple ingredients.
  • Suitable for babies from 6 months old.
  • Great side dish with your main and not messy.
  • Easy to hold for young babies.

🥘 Ingredients

To make about 4 portions of these BLW-friendly baked potato wedges, we need about 4-5 medium-sized potatoes, olive oil, sweet paprika, italian seasoning or oregano, ground garlic and salt (not for babies under 12 months).

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions

So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!

01. I'm peeling and cutting the potato into wedges. I like this shape as they are more chunky and easy to hold for the kids. You could also cut them thinner but you will have to bake them for less time in this case.

02. I add the cut potatoes to a bowl filled with water and let them sit for 15 minutes. This step helps to get some of the potato amylase off and make the wedges crispier.

Step1: Cutting the potatoes into wedges. Step2: Putting the potato wedges into a bowl filled with water.

03. I drain the potato wedges and give them a rinse. The next important step is to get a clean towel and pat dry the potato wedges on all sides. This also helps with the crispiness.

04. I add the potato wedges to a bowl and now it's time to add the spices. I add the sweet paprika, oregano, ground garlic and two tablespoons of olive oil. Using a spoon or just my hands, I mix everything well to coat the potato wedges on all sides.

Step3: Getting the potato wedges dry with a tea towel. Step4: Adding the spices to the bowl.

05. I place about half of the potato wedges on a lined baking tray. Then I add some salt to the remaining wedges and place them on a second baking tray for the adults and older kids.

06. Make sure your oven is preheated and try not to overcrowd them. The potato wedges shouldn't be on top of each other to get a nice and crispy result.

Step5: Placing the potato wedges on a lined baking tray. Step6: Potato wedges when they come out of the oven.

📖 Substitutions & Variations

  • Instead of oregano, you could use mixed dry herbs or Italian seasoning.
  • You could cut the potatoes into wedges, thin fries or with a crinkle cutter.

🍽 Serving suggestions

Babies 6m-12m: For little ones under 12 months that follow the BLW method, you could serve these baked potato wedges with some protein on the side, like my baked meatballs or some chicken, and some more veggies or sticks of cucumber and halved cherry tomatoes. You could also offer them as a little snack with a dip, like hummus, yogurt or my easy homemade ketchup.

Toddlers, older kids & adults: For older kids and adults, you could add some salt before baking or when served. They are a great side dish with pretty much anything, meat or fish, veggie patties or to snack on with a dip or just on their own.

🧰 Storage

The recipe yields about 4 servings of potato wedges for a family of 2 adults and 1 or 2 kids. I must say that they are best enjoyed when freshly baked and hot or within a couple of hours after.

We rarely get any leftovers, but if you do have, store them in the fridge and consume them within 1–2 days.

💭 Tips

  • Leave the potatoes in the water for 10-15 minutes to rest before adding the spices and oil.
  • Pat-dry the potato wedges with a clean towel before seasoning.
  • Use a big tray to give some space between the potato wedges for a crispier result.

❓ FAQ

Can I leave the skin on the potato wedges?

Yes, you could definitely leave the skin on. Give the potatoes a good wash to remove any dirt and soil. Then cut them into wedges and make sure the skin is on the side when you lie them on the tray to get crispy.
