Quick and easy cheese scones that little ones can enjoy for breakfast, as a snack, or packed for school alongside some fruit and veggies. Enjoy!

I love scones, sweet or savory, not only because they’re delicious, but also because they don’t require much kneading and preparation. You simply add the ingredients in a specific order, gently press the dough to shape it, cut it into pieces, and let the oven do the rest.
These homemade cheese scones are made with just a few basic ingredients like flour, butter, and milk. You can use cheddar, Swiss, or even a mix of leftover cheeses you have at home. The texture is more crumbly than bread but still soft when they are freshly made.
For babies under 12 months, I recommend using a low sodium cheese, like a mix of mozzarella and swiss cheese, to keep the sodium low. The cheese scones, are soft and easy to hold with their little hands, making them great for breakfast or snacking.

- Made with simple ingredients that we all have in our pantry.
- You can use any leftover cheese that you have at home.
🥘 Ingredients
To make these homemade cheese scones, we are going to use all-purpose flour, baking powder, cold butter, milk, egg and cheese.
- Flour: I'm using all-purpose flour and baking powder as a raising agent. You could also use self-rising flour in the same quantity and reduce the baking powder to one teaspoon.
- Butter: I'm using unsalted butter. Make sure the butter is cold to get that flaky scone texture and a good lamination.
- Milk: To make the cocoa puffs more crunchy and puff up, I'm using a little bit of baking soda.
- Cheese: I'm using cheddar cheese as we like the flavor when baked. You could also use Swiss or mozarella or a mix of different cheeses.

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions
So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!
01. In a bowl, I mix the flour and baking powder. I cut the cold butter into cubes and add it to the flour. Make sure the butter is cold, straight out of the fridge.
02. You could use a food processor, stand mixer with a paddle attachment or simply rub the butter with flour using your fingertips.

03. When the mixture starts looking like coarse sand, I add the grated cheese and mix it again to incorporate it.
04. Next, I combine the egg and cold milk in a bowl and add it back to the flour. I mix it until it forms into a lightly sticky dough.

05. I sprinkle a little flour on my work surface and place the dough on top. The key here is not to overwork it. I gently shape the dough with my hands into a round about 1 inch thick.
06. Before cutting it into pieces, I brush the top with a little milk and sprinkle over some extra cheese. This helps give the scones a beautiful golden color when baked.

07. I like to cut the dough into triangles, but you can also use a round cutter. Make sure to cut straight down without twisting the knife too much, so you get clean edges that help the scones rise nicely.
08. I place the scones on a lined baking tray leaving about 2 fingers space between them to let them rise in the oven. It takes about 20 minutes to get a nice golden brown color.

🍽 Serving Suggestions
We love these cheese scones on their own, or sliced in half and spread with a little butter.
They’re perfect for breakfast or as a snack, especially with some fruit on the side for a little extra goodness.
🧰 Storage
If you have any leftover scones, store them in an airtight container and enjoy them within 1–2 days. You can warm them in the microwave for a few seconds to make them soft and warm again.
They also freeze well for up to 3 months. Simply thaw them in the fridge overnight, then reheat in the microwave or oven for the best texture.

❓ FAQ
Yes you could substitute all-purpose flour with self-rising flour when making cheese scones but you will have to adjust the amount of baking powder. Instead of using one tablespoon, you will have to reduce it to one teaspoon.
Yes you can cut them into a more traditional English round shape using a round cutter. Make sure you don't twist the cutter but cut it all the way down. Press the remaining dough together without kneading it and cut it again.
