Great for breakfast or as a snack, these sugar-free banana and blueberry waffles will be a weekly favorite both for kids and adults. Enjoy!
Waffles are perfect not just for breakfast but also as a snack or for packing. We often enjoy them on weekends when the mornings are more relaxed. Making the batter with the kids has become a fun tradition—they love being part of the process, even though it does make the kitchen a bit messy at times!
These blueberry and banana waffles are a staple in our home, since you will always find blueberries in our fridge. They don't have any processed sugar added, all the sweetness comes from one ripe banana that also adds a lot of flavor to the waffles.
If you're using a single waffle maker like I do, be prepared for a bit of a wait to finish all the waffles—though they often vanish straight off the waffle iron as they're made!

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions
So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!
01. To start, I peel and add the banana to a bowl. With a fork or a masher, I mash the banana. I like to use a ripe banana for a stronger banana flavor and to get more sweetness since I'm not using any sugar to make these blueberry waffles.
02. Then, I add the egg, milk, butter and vanilla extract. I mix all the wet ingredients well. If you'd like to make these banana blueberry waffles dairy-free, you could use non-dairy milk and light olive oil or coconut oil.
03. Now, it's time to add the dry ingredients. I'm using all-purpose flour and baking powder as a raising agent. With a whisk, I mix everything until the flour is incorporated.
04. Before adding the blueberries to the batter, I wash them and cut them in half. I add them to the bowl and mix them with a spatula.
05. Moving to the waffle maker, I heat it and add a ¼ cup of the batter for my single waffle maker. If you have a bigger one, then you will need to adjust the amount of batter you add and it will also be quicker for you!
06. I cook each waffle for 3–4 minutes until it has a nice brown color. It's normal to hear some sizzling at first from the blueberries—it just means they're releasing their juices!
📖 Substitutions & Variations
- To make the waffles dairy-free, you could use a non-dairy milk of your choice and vegetable oil instead of butter.
- You could leave out the vanilla extract if you don't have any.
- You could use frozen blueberries instead of fresh but be prepared for more sizzling!
🍽 Serving suggestions
For babies under 12 months, I like to cut the waffle into quarters or strips as it's easier to put in their mouth and munch. I serve them usually plain with some yogurt and fruits on the side for some protein.
For older kids and adults, you could add some honey or maple syrup on top, or even some nut butter or jam.
🧰 Storage
On the rare occasion that you don't finish all the waffles in one day, you can store them in an airtight container for up to two days.
What I also love about waffles is how well they freeze! Simply stack them with a bit of parchment paper between each one for easy thawing. They’ll keep in the freezer for up to three months.
❓ FAQ
Yes, you could use frozen blueberries in the waffles instead of fresh ones. You might need to leave them in the waffle maker for a bit longer as they will have more juice.
