These homemade cookie sticks are made without any refined white sugar and are perfect for little ones to snack on. You can fully coat them in melted chocolate, drizzle some over the top to create a pretty pattern, or leave them plain for a healthier treat.

These homemade chocolate cookie sticks are simply irresistible! Both kids and adults will love them, and you can dip them in melted semi-sweet or white chocolate for an extra-special treat.

The cookie sticks are not overly sweet, as they’re made without any refined white sugar and are naturally sweetened with just a little maple syrup. Get the kids involved in shaping the cookies, or follow my instructions below to see how to easily shape them using just a sheet of parchment paper and a dough scraper.

👩🏻‍🍳 Why you should try my recipe

  • Easy to hold and snack on.
  • Makes a big batch.
  • Naturally sweetened, no white refined sugar.
  • Easy to shape if you follow my tips.
  • Perfect as a snack or to pack.

🥘 Ingredients

To make these homemade cookie sticks, we are going to use all-purpose flour, baking powder, butter, egg, maple syrup and vanilla extract.

  • Butter: I’m using unsalted butter that is softened at room temperature for about an hour before I'm planning to prepare the dough.
  • Maple syrup: A little bit of maple syrup is added to add sweetness to these cookie sticks. You could substitute with honey if you prefer.
  • Vanilla: I'm using vanilla extract or paste to add some flavor to the cookie stick.

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions

So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!

01. In a bowl, I mix the softened butter, maple syrup, egg and vanilla extract with a whisk until combined.

02. Next, I add the dry ingredients to the bowl and mix until I have a soft, non-sticky, pliable dough.

Step1: Mixing softened butter, egg and maple syrup. Step2: Dough is ready.

03. You can make the cookie sticks as long or as thick as you like. I like to take about 10g / 0.35oz of cookie dough and shape into a ball with my hands.

04. Next, I place the ball inside the fold of a sheet of parchment paper. Using my dough scraper, I push back the top layer of parchment paper and gently press and shape the dough into a stick.

05. I place the sticks on a lined baking tray leaving about a finger space between them. Since they are pretty thin, it takes only about 12-15 minutes to bake. We are looking for a very light brown color.

06. Once the cookie sticks have cooled completely, I like to dip half of each one in melted chocolate. I then refrigerate them until the chocolate has fully set.

🍽  Serving Suggestions

These kid-friendly chocolate cookie sticks can be offered plain for a healthier treat or dipped in chocolate.

You could also leave them plain and offer them with my sugar-free chocolate spread or some jam on the side so your kids can dip them in for a more fun treat.

🧰 Storage

You could store the cookie sticks in an airtight container for a week or refrigerate for up to 10 days.

❓ FAQ

Can I add more flavors to the cookie sticks?

Yes, you could add some orange or lemon zest for a more citrus flavor or a quarter teaspoon of your favorite flavor extract.

How can I make the cookie sticks the same size?

For a more uniform size, I recommend weighing the dough and using the same amount for each cookie stick. You can also lay the sticks side by side and trim them to the same length. Alternatively, make one long strip of dough and cut it into smaller, evenly sized sticks.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven 350℉ / 180℃.
  • In a bowl, mix the egg, softened butter, maple syrup and vanilla extract.
  • Add the flour and baking powder. Mix with a spatula or your hands until you have a soft but not sticky dough.
  • Take a small piece of dough, about 10gr or a leveled tablespoon. Form into a ball using your palms.
  • Place the dough ball inside a fold of parchment paper and press it gently with a dough scraper or ruler.
  • Keep pressing until you have the desired length and thickness. Reuse the parchment paper for the remaining dough.
  • Place the cookie sticks on a lined baking tray, leaving about a finger space between them. Bake for 12-15 minutes. Let them rest for 5 minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool down completely.
  • Melt the chocolate chips with the coconut oil. Dip half of each cookie stick into the melted chocolate and set aside until the chocolate has fully set. Alternatively, you can brush the chocolate onto the cookie sticks for a more rustic finish and a thinner layer of chocolate.

Notes

  • You could leave the cookie sticks plain and serve them with a jam or chocolate or nut butter dip.
  • Instead of maple syrup, you could use honey (NOT for kids under 12 months).
  • Freezable (without the chocolate cover) for up to 2 months.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
