These baked donuts are a healthier alternative to store-bought donuts, which are typically deep-fried and packed with sugar. You only need 6 simple ingredients to make the batter, and they take less than 15 minutes to bake in the oven. Enjoy!

Baked donuts with strawberry glaze on a wire rack.

I shared my recipe for baked apple & cinnamon donuts a few months ago, but this time I wanted to add a basic recipe for plain baked donuts to the site.

These healthy baked donuts are made without any refined sugar, using just a little maple syrup for sweetness and vanilla extract for flavor. They come out light, soft, and fluffy.

You can coat them in melted chocolate and add some sprinkles, make my honey and dried strawberry glaze, or simply enjoy them plain.

👩🏻‍🍳 Why you should try my recipe

  • Easy to hold and snack on.
  • Healthier than store-bought donuts.
  • Naturally sweetened, no white refined sugar.
  • Easy to make the batter and quick to bake.
  • Perfect as a snack or to pack.

🥘 Ingredients

To make these delicious baked donuts, we are going to use all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, oil, eggs, maple syrup, milk and vanilla extract.

  • Oil: I’m using avocado oil but you could also use light olive oil, coconut oil or melted butter.
  • Maple syrup: A little bit of maple syrup is added to add sweetness to these baked donuts. You could substitute with honey if you prefer.
  • Vanilla: I'm using vanilla extract or paste to add some flavor to the batter.

For full quantities and to print the recipe, see the recipe card below.

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions

So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!

01. In a bowl, I mix the wet ingredients first with a whisk until all combined (eggs, milk, oil, vanilla extract, maple syrup).

02. Next, I add the dry ingredients to the bowl and mix until I have a thin batter similar to pancake batter.

Step1: Mixing wet ingredients. Step2: Batter is ready.

03. I’m using a silicone donut pan to bake these donuts. If you’re using a metal one, lightly spray it with oil to make it easier to remove the donuts once they’re baked.

I add the batter to the donut pan using a quarter cup measure, or you can transfer the batter to a piping bag and pipe it into each donut case.

04. I leave about a finger’s width of space at the top of each donut case to give the donuts room to rise as they bake.

This donut case is so easy to use and clean. The donuts come out easy by just turning the case upside down on a wire rack and have a perfect round shape. Highly recommended!

05. When they come out of the oven, I let them rest for 5 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

06. You can serve them plain, dip them in melted chocolate, or make my easy strawberry glaze. To make the glaze, I grind two tablespoons of dried strawberries using a pestle and mortar, then mix them with ¼ cup of honey (NOT suitable for babies under 12 months).

🍽  Serving Suggestions

These kid-friendly baked donuts can be offered plain for a healthier treat, dipped in melted chocolate or with a glaze.

🧰 Storage

You could store the baked donuts in an airtight container for 2-3 days.

If you would like to freeze them, I recommend doing it as soon as they cool down and before you add any glaze or chocolate on top.

❓ FAQ

Can I use non-dairy milk?

Yes, you could use the same amount of your favorite non-dairy milk.

Notes

  • To make my strawberry glaze, grind two tablespoons of dried strawberries using a pestle and mortar. Mix with ¼ cup of honey, then dip the baked donuts into the glaze and serve.
Keep in mind that this glaze does not thicken or set. If left on the donuts for a day, it will soak in and lose its shine. I recommend glazing the donuts just before serving if you don’t plan to eat them soon after.
  • Freeze the baked donuts before glazing. You can freeze them for up to 2 months.
  • If using a silicone donut pan, you can add the batter directly to each case. If using a metal donut pan, I recommend lightly spraying it with oil to make it easier to remove the donuts once baked.
