Pancakes are one of those versatile foods that kids love not only for breakfast but also as a sweet treat. These chocolate oat pancakes are perfect for both—serve them in the morning or as a dessert with a drizzle of honey, some fresh berries, or even a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

They’re simple to make and have a soft yet slightly denser texture than traditional pancakes, thanks to the use of oats instead of all-purpose flour.

👩🏻‍🍳 Why you should try my recipe

  • Sugar-free pancakes that the whole family can enjoy guilt-free.
  • Suitable for babies, toddlers and kids of all ages.
  • Freezable for busy days.
  • Can be served for breakfast, dessert or snack.
  • Easy to pack for days at the park and lunchboxes.

🥘 Ingredients

To make these sugar-free chocolate oat pancakes, we are going to use oats, baking powder, cacao powder, eggs, milk, butter, dates and vanilla extract.

  • Oats: I'm using 2 cups of old-fashioned oats that I blend to make them into a flour texture.
  • Dates: Instead of white sugar, I'm using dates to sweeten up the pancakes.
  • Milk: You could use whole milk, low fat or a dairy-free alternative of your choice.

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions

So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!

01. In a bowl, I add the pitted dates cut in half and a third cup of hot water. I leave the dates to soak in the hot water and get soft for about 10–15 minutes. This is going to help with blending.

02. While the dates soak, I add the oats to a food processor and blend them until they resemble oat flour. I'm using old-fashioned or rolled oats.

Step1: Soaking the dates in hot water. Step2: Oats after blended into oat flour.

03. I empty the blended oats to a bowl and in the same food processor, I add the dates with the water, the melted butter and vanilla extract. I blend everything together until I have a thick paste.

04. I empty the content of the blender to a bowl and add the eggs and milk. I mix everything together.

Step3: Blended dates with butter into cream. Step4: Mixing wet ingredients in a bowl.

05. Next, it's time to add the dry ingredients. I add the oat flour, cacao powder and baking powder into the bowl.

06. Using a spatula or a whisk, I gently combine everything together until I have a lightly thick batter.

Step5: Adding dry ingredients to the bowl. Step6: Batter is ready for making the pancakes.

07. Next, I place the pan over medium heat and brush some oil on the surface. I add about a third cup of the batter to the center of the pan.

08. When I start seeing bubbles, I carefully flip the chocolate oat pancake to cook on the other side. It takes about a couple of minutes on each side.

Step7: Adding chocolate oat pancake batter to the pan. Step8: Flipping pancake to cook on both sides.

🍽 Serving suggestions

We often enjoy these chocolate oat pancakes as a snack or breakfast. The kids especially love them served with fruit on the side and a drizzle of maple syrup or honey (note: honey is not recommended for children under 12 months).

🧰 Storage

The recipe yields about 10 chocolate oat pancakes. They are best enjoyed when served warm and fresh. If you have any leftovers, you could store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Warm them up in a pan or microwave for a few seconds, and serve with your favorite toppings.

The pancakes are also freezable for up to 2 months. It's best to freeze them as soon as they cool down in freezable bags or containers.
