Fall season means pumpkins, squash, apples, pears, and of course, warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. My waffle maker has a special plate for mini pumpkin-shaped waffles, so I just had to try a batter using some of my favorite fall ingredients.

These cute pumpkin spice waffles are made with pumpkin purée, pumpkin spice, and a few simple pantry staples. The moment the batter hits the hot waffle plate, your kitchen will smell like fall. Whether you’re making them for the kids or just for yourself, they’re sure to become a seasonal favorite!

👩🏻‍🍳 Why you should try my recipe

  • You can get the kids involved into mixing the ingredients.
  • Suitable for babies, toddlers, older kids and adults.
  • Easy to pack for days out and lunchboxes.
  • Great as a snack or breakfast.

🥘 Ingredients

To make these pumpkin spice waffles, we are going to need whole wheat flour, baking powder, pumpkin spice, ground cinnamon, eggs, butter, milk, maple syrup and pumpkin purée.

  • Flour: I’m using whole wheat flour and baking powder as a rising agent. You could also all-purpose flour if you prefer.
  • Pumpkin spice: You can use store-bought pumpkin spice or make your own by mixing 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon of ginger powder, ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves.
  • Pumpkin purée: You could use homemade or store-bought one.
  • Maple Syrup: For sweetness, I like to use 1–2 tablespoons of maple syrup. You could leave it out if you prefer.

🔪 Step-by-step Instructions

So get your ingredients ready and let's get started!

01. I start by mixing the wet ingredients, the eggs, maple syrup, milk, pumpkin purée and melted butter in a bowl with a whisk.

02. Then I add the flour, baking powder, pumpkin spice and cinnamon. I lightly mix everything until incorporated and now my batter is ready.

Step1: Mixing the wet ingredients in a bowl. Step2: Added the dry ingredients.

03. I warm up the waffle maker and add about ¼ cup for each waffle. If you have a waffle maker with different plates for fall season or Halloween, you could make some with adjusting the amount of batter. Little ones love fun shapes!

04. I leave each pancake for 4–5 minutes to cook until it has a nice orange-brown color.

Step3: Added batter to the waffle maker. Step4: Pumpkin waffle is ready.

🍽 Serving suggestions

Babies under 12 months: You can serve the pumpkin spice waffles plain, with some fruit on the side or a little yogurt. They’re easy for little hands to hold and bring to the mouth, but if your baby is still practicing those skills, you can cut the waffles into strips.

Toddlers and other ages: You can drizzle some maple syrup over the warm pumpkin spice waffles for extra sweetness and serve them with berries or diced apples sprinkled with a little cinnamon. For a dessert version, add a couple of waffles to a plate with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

🧰 Storage

This recipe makes 15 mini pumpkin spice waffles, or less if you have a big waffle maker. If you have any leftovers, then you could store them in an airtight container at room temperature for 1–2 days.

You can also freeze them for up to 2 months. Just let them cool completely, then place a few in a freezer-safe bag with some parchment paper between them, and pop them in the freezer.

❓ FAQ

How can I make my own pumpkin spice at home?

To make your own homemade pumpkin spice, all you need is to combine in a bowl one teaspoon of ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon of ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves and ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg.
